“How much does a home gym cost?” depends on where you live, even when you buy the exact same equipment. Sales tax runs from 5% to 15%, and some stores charge more to ship to some provinces, or don't ship there at all. So we asked our Builder to price the same three gyms for every province and territory, using prices checked up to Nov 7, 2026.
The three gyms
- Strength starter: rack, barbell, plates and bench (you already own dumbbells).
- Strength + dumbbells: the same, plus dumbbells.
- Strength + cardio: the full set plus a cardio machine, in a 14 × 20 ft basement with an 8 ft ceiling.
All-in, province by province

All prices in Canadian dollars, including tax and published shipping. Where a store doesn't publish shipping to a province, it isn't in the total. A smaller piece count means something on the list isn't sold to that province by the stores we track.
Why the totals differ
- Sales tax: Alberta and the territories pay only 5% GST; the Atlantic provinces pay 14 or 15% HST.
- Shipping: some Canadian stores ship free to most provinces but charge, or don't ship, to remote areas and the territories.
- What's available: if a product isn't sold where you live, the Builder picks the next best one, which can cost more.
