Canadian basements are often 7 to 7½ feet to the joists, and less under ducts and beams. That rules out a lot of equipment, but not a good gym. Here's how to measure, what fits, and the movements you'll want to swap.
Measure the lowest point, not the average
- Measure from the floor to the lowest thing above where the rack will stand: a duct, beam, light or pipe.
- Subtract your flooring. ¾-inch stall mats or tiles take ¾ inch off. A platform takes more.
- Check the path too: you'll tip a rack upright during assembly, which needs more height than standing it up.
What fits: every rack in our catalog
A rack fits if it's at least an inch under your ceiling. For pull-ups on the top bar, you want about 18 inches of space above it for your head and shoulders. ✓ = fits with pull-up room, ◐ = fits but no pull-ups on top, ✗ = too tall.

Movements to rethink
- Standing overhead press: your arms plus the bar can pass 7 feet even if you're average height. Press seated, use a landmine press, or press dumbbells with a slight lean.
- Box jumps and jump rope: do them outside or skip them. Conditioning on a rower or bike stays low.
- Treadmills: the deck lifts you several inches, and you bounce as you run. A rower or air bike is usually the better cardio pick under a low ceiling.
- Kipping pull-ups and muscle-ups: no. Strict pull-ups with your head between the joists can work, if you measure first.
Other ways to win back height
- Put the rack between joists, or under the highest bay of the basement.
- Choose squat stands or a half rack: they're often shorter and easier to place.
- Skip a thick platform. ¾-inch rubber is enough for most home lifting.
